School budget for 2013 passes validation; Dill favored by Cape voters for Democratic nod to U.S. Senate

Cape Elizabeth voters overwhelmingly approved of the 2013 school budget passed by the Town Council last month, and Cape Democrats favored their own in primary election voting June 12, 2012.

Unofficial results Tuesday night showed the $21.8 million school budget approved by the Town Council May 14 was validated by voters, with 1,323 voting "Yes", and 518 voting "No". In a second, non-binding vote on the school budget, 950 said they found the amount acceptable, while 603 said it was too high and 192 said it was too low.

In the state primary election in Cape Elizabeth, Cape resident and state Sen. Cynthia Dill garnered the most votes in her bid for the Democratic Party nomination for U.S. Senate, winning 670 votes and outpacing Matthew Dunlap, 129 votes; Jon Hinck, 102 votes; and Justin Benjamin Pollard, 22 votes, in Cape Elizabeth.

Likewise Cape Elizabeth resident Rebecca Millett was favored in her bid for the Democratic nomination to state Senate, with 737 votes in Cape Elizabeth compared to 214 votes for South Portland's Bryan Kaenrath. Both are seeking the Democratic nod to run for the state Senate seat for District 7 representing Cape Elizabeth, South Portland and Scarborough.

U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, a Democrat, received the most votes of any one candidate in the Cape Elizabeth primary with 890.

Town Clerk Debra Lane said unofficial turnout was 1,882 ballots cast for the school budget validation and 1,786 for the state primary, out of approximately 7,500 registered voters.
