Former Yarmouth superintendent to serve as interim for Cape schools
Dr. Ken Murphy, longtime superintendent for Yarmouth schools, will serve as Cape Elizabeth's interim superintendent from Jan. 1, 2011 to the end of the school year. Murphy's nomination was approved by the School Board at their meeting Oct. 12, 2010.
Murphy served 18 years as superintendent in Yarmouth before his retirement in 2009, board chairwoman Rebecca Millett said at the meeting. "He brings with him an acute understanding of state and local issues that affect the teachers and students here in Southern Maine," she said in a prepared statement. "His breadth of knowledge in these areas will allow the district to continue to move forward, even as we take the time to search for a permanent superintendent for Cape Elizabeth," she said.
Murphy will replace Alan Hawkins, who announced his retirement earlier this fall. At the time Hawkins said he would stay on in Cape Elizabeth in an advisory capacity until the end of the school year.
In a press release, the School Board announced it would hold a gathering in January to officially welcome Murphy and introduce him to the community.
"In his 18 years as superintendent of the Yarmouth schools, Murphy helped move the district forward by enacting innovative change for his district, including:
- "Supporting a new K-12 curriculum design process and assessment system
- "Advancing a new teacher evaluation process that included input from administrators, parents, students and colleagues
- "Working to expand the student and teacher school day/school year", the release says.
Yarmouth's school department is similar in size to Cape Elizabeth's, and like Cape Elizabeth's, is consistently cited on Newsweek and Business Week’s list of top performing schools.
"In addition, Dr. Murphy brings a strong understanding of school budget process, an unwavering focus on improving teaching and learning, and a commitment to collaborative leadership," the release says.
