Board ponders next steps following announcement of superintendent's retirement

The School Board is working to gather information and advice on the next steps for finding a new superintendent.

More meetings and discussions will be held as the board first looks for an interim superintendent to begin Jan. 1, 2011, and then begins the search for a permanent successor for Alan Hawkins.

Hawkins, Cape Elizabeth superintendent since 2005, announced this week his plan to retire at the end of the calendar year.

Since his announcement at the board's meeting Aug. 24, 2010, School Board Chair Rebecca Millett has contacted the Maine School Management Association for advice and resources on how to proceed in finding a new superintendent.

Millett said the board needs to talk about the upcoming process, and that more meetings and discussions will be announced.
