250TH ANNIVERSARY OF CAPE ELIZABETH

 MAY THROUGH NOVEMBER 2015 EVENTS

 

Unless otherwise noted, all events are free of charge thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Town of Cape Elizabeth and its 250th Anniversary committee.

MAY

•Friday, May 1:  Hanging of the anniversary banners on Ocean House and Scott Dyer Roads. 

•Friday, May 1:  Premier of the short history documentary film, “Cape Elizabeth:  Time’s Rising Tides,” by CEHS grads Thomas and Peter Campbell – 6:00-8:00 pm, Town Council Chambers.  Light refreshments will be served. Film showings at 6:15, 6:45, 7:15 and 7:45 p.m.

•Saturday, May 2:  Bus tours of historic sites (southern focus) will be offered by the Cape Elizabeth Historic Preservation Society members, 9:00-11:00 a.m.  Reservations may be made through the Community Services office by calling 799-2868.  Buses will leave from the parking lot behind Community Services.

•Saturday, May 9:  Bus tours of historic will again be offered by the Cape Elizabeth Historic Preservation Society members, 9:00-11:00 a.m.  (northern focus) Reservations as noted above may be made through the Community Services office.

•Wednesday, May 13:  Earle Shettleworth, Maine State Historian, will offer a lecture on the art and architecture of John Calvin Stevens; 7:00 pm, Town Hall Chambers.  No reservations are required.

Also:  “The Paintings of John Calvin Stevens” will be exhibited at the University of New England, Portland campus gallery, from April 21 through July 19 and feature homes in Cape Elizabeth neighborhoods.

•Saturday, May 16:  Walking tour of Delano Park at 10:00 a.m. to see several John Calvin Stevens residences.  This tour has a limit of 40 participants.  Reservations can be made at the May 13 lecture or by calling Bob Ayotte at 799-3649 or Barbara Powers at 799-7875.  Maps will be available at the lecture or at the Community Services office for parking and group meeting directions.

•Monday, May 25:  Memorial Day Parade featuring 250th anniversary banner and legacy families.  Interested participants with 100-year family connections are asked to call Randy Blake at 799-1473.

•Sunday, May 31: Cape 5K Challenge with 250th anniversary special features.  Registration fees raise important funds for all three schools.

JUNE

•Saturday, June 13:  Family Fun Day – 250th Birthday Party theme; old time crafts and games, special parade float.  If funds can be raised, fireworks will close the event that evening.

•Saturday, June 20:  Ice Cream Social at Turkey Hill Farm, 1:30-4:00 p.m.  Old-fashioned games and crafts will be offered as well.  Watch for information in The Courier about an ice cream flavor contest! 

•Saturday, June 27:  Strawberry Festival – 250th activities sponsored by the Cape Farm Alliance.

JULY

•Saturday, July 25:  “A Night at the Light”  -- the Portland Symphony Orchestra is ready to return to Fort Williams Park for a special anniversary concert on the Green next to the Lighthouse at Portland Head from 6:30-8:00 pm.   General admission tickets will be available beginning May 1 through Eventbrite.com. Costs are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and students ages 13-20, and $10 for children 2-12.   Cape residents requiring assistance with ticket purchasing (i.e., uncomfortable with an on line order) should call Barbara Powers @ 799-7875.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Fort Williams Foundation’s Children’s Garden.  Further information is also available on Facebook at www.facebook.com/anightatthelight.  Also, VIP tickets can be purchased using a special order form located on the Fort Williams Park Foundation website @ www.fortwilliams.org .

AUGUST

•Saturday, August 15:  Nosegay making at Norm Jordan’s farm, corner of Ocean House Road and Fowler Road.  Participants are welcome to pick small bouquets from the garden located there from 9:00 a.m. – noon.  Instruction will then be given about making a nosegay with information about the meaning of the selected flowers.

SEPTEMBER

•Monday, September 28:  The Good Table will be hosting a very special dinner featuring produce from Cape Elizabeth’s farm gardens.  Reservations will be required for 70 lucky diners.  The cost of this prix-fixed meal will be published as soon as it is available, along with the date reservations will be accepted.

 

OCTOBER

•Sunday, October 4:  Lions Club Pancake Breakfast at the Bowery Beach Schoolhouse. 8:00-11:00 a.m.

•Sunday, October 4:  Short presentations will be made on the hour and half hour at several historic and geological sites around Cape Elizabeth from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.  Maps and directions will be available prior to the event so those interested can choose which sites to visit.  The Cape Elizabeth Land Trust is joining the 250th Anniversary Committee and Cape Elizabeth Historical Preservation Society in sponsorship of this event.

NOVEMBER

•Sunday, November 1:  This is the actual date of Cape Elizabeth’s incorporation in 1765.  To celebrate this historic day and as the last event of the 250th anniversary celebration, the Inn by the Sea will be hosting a ticketed cocktail party from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
