Superintendent asks for public
input on schools' vision statement
As the School Department prepares to review its five-year Future Direction
Plan, the superintendent is starting a community dialogue by asking for input
on part of the schools' vision statements.
In a
news
release published on the schools' website, Superintendent Alan Hawkins
has asked members of the community to comment on part of the vision for Cape
Elizabeth schools that was approved in 2001:
Cape Elizabeth will be one of the top public school systems in the U.S.
having created a dynamic organization which inspires an enthusiastic, innovative
and collaborative environment that results in a high level of learning and
achievement for all.
"As superintendent, I would like to begin to understand how the public views
our educational programs and what is working and what needs work," Hawkins
said. "This week I want to start that communication with a question about
the vision. Please take the time to respond to the following question:
"My initial question to you focuses on that part of the vision statement
that reads 'Cape Elizabeth will be one of the top school systems in the
U.S. ...
"What does that statement mean to you and how do our schools meet or not
meet that plan?"
Responses may be emailed to Hawkins at

The vision is part of the current Future Direction Plan that was developed
through a series of community meetings and focus groups five years ago. "We
are now reviewing the content of the original plan, assessing our successes
and needs, and extending a plan for the future," Hawkins said.
Over the next few months, the schools' Strategic Planning Committee, led
by School Board member Trish Brigham, will institute a plan that engages
members of the School Board, staff, parents, Cape Elizabeth citizens who
do not have children in the system, students, and the administration, he
said. "At the same time, the superintendents communication with the
community is extremely important," he said.
The School Department plans to develop a 'blog' website to gather and share
information with the public. In the meantime, Hawkins said he is opening
the community discussion through his email address.
