Town Manager to step down

Press Release

March 25, 2024

Town Manager Matthew Sturgis will be stepping down as Town Manager as of May 8, 2024. Matt has accepted a position to become the next Town Manager for the Town of Cumberland. The new position is an exciting opportunity for further professional growth and is very close to his home. Matt will be replacing Town Manager Bill Shane, who is retiring after 20 years with Cumberland.

“With 24 plus years of service to the Town, I am very grateful for the opportunities provided during my tenure, serving the residents of Cape Elizabeth, and the experience of working with a team of dedicated professionals. It has also been a sincere pleasure working with this council and previous council members during my time with the Town.” Sturgis said.

Matt has offered his assistance during this transition period, in the hopes of making this as smooth as possible.

Sturgis also stated “I am grateful to The Town of Cape Elizabeth, its residents, and the people I have worked with over this time.”

Cape Elizabeth Town Council Chair, Timothy Reiniger, reluctantly accepted the resignation. “On behalf of the Town Council, I want to thank Matt for his personal devotion to Cape Elizabeth these past eight years as Town Manager and, before that, sixteen years as Town Assessor. To the Town Council members past and present, fellow town employees, and the citizens of Cape Elizabeth of all walks of life, Matt has demonstrated the highest professionalism and personal integrity. He is a terrific public servant and, most especially, a great human being. We are very glad to know that his next career step will be in nearby Cumberland and wish him the best possible success there.”

Reiniger further stated “In accordance with past practice, the Town Council will immediately launch a formal search and selection process with the goal of appointing the next Town Manager ideally to coincide with Matt’s departure.”
