Capers turn out in droves to defeat Question 1

Cape Elizabeth voters turned out heavily in an off-year election to defeat a citizen initiative that would ban so-called partial birth abortion.

Voter turnout was 56.1 percent, with 4,128 Cape Elizabeth voters coming to the polls. Town Clerk Debra Lane attributed the heavy turnout to the controversial abortion question.

A total 2,723 Cape voters voted against the proposed ban, while only 1,368 supported it.

In another initiative that caused some debate this election year, Cape voters favored a question that would allow patients with specific illnesses to grow and use small amounts of marijuana. The Cape vote was 2,675 for such use, and 1,422 against.

On all other issues, Cape voters voted for all bond issues and Constitutional amendments.
