McLaughlin wins re-election to State House

State Rep. Janet McLaughlin won re-election to the Maine House of Representatives Tuesday, defeating Republican opponent Phineas Sprague with 55 percent of votes cast.

The general and referendum election drew thousands to the polls at Cape Elizabeth High School, with 65 percent of 7,828 registered voters casting ballots. Of those, 630 were absentee.

Cape Elizabeth did not follow the rest of the state in electing John Baldacci governor. Peter Cianchette, who formerly represented the northern part of town in the State House, was Cape's pick for governor, taking 48 percent of the Cape vote. Baldacci trailed Cianchette with 40 percent in Cape Elizabeth at the end of the evening.

Cape voters also said they wished to send their Congressional delegation back to Washington for another term, giving the majority of their votes to U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and to U.S. Rep. Tom Allen.

In the referendum election, voters in Cape Elizabeth gave an emphatic "no" to the bond issue for correctional facilities, with 59 percent voting against; an even more emphatic "yes" to the enivronmental bond issue, with 65 percent voting in favor; and, "yes" to the constitutional amendment, with 60 percent voting in favor.
