Following a recount of ballots cast in the Nov. 7 election for Maine State House Dist. 121, Democrat Cynthia Dill remained the winner in the close race.
The recount was requested by the Republican candidate for the office, Jennifer Duddy, following the town's reporting of a discrepancy in the number of votes cast.
The recount, conducted Nov. 27 by the Secretary of State's office, showed Dill the winner with 2,345 votes, and Duddy with 2,201, a difference of 144 votes.
The original tally showed Dill winning with 2,432 votes, 176 more than Duddy's 2,256.
According to Cape Elizabeth Town Clerk April Cohen-Tracy, no other local candidates requested recounts after announcement of the discrepancy.
The error became apparent after the election when, after a question about the number of total ballots, officials noted that the number of votes on Question 1, the 'Taxpayer's Bill of Rights' referendum, exceeded the estimated number of total ballots cast.
