School budget for 2009-10 passes validation

Cape Elizabeth voters on May 12, 2009 approved a $19.3 million school budget for 2009-10 which was adopted by the Town Council on April 30.

Unofficial results Tuesday night show the vote was  1,348 Yes, and 952 No. (results officiated 05/13/09)

In an advisory ballot, 988 voters said they believed the budget was too high; 616 said it was too low, and 640 said it was acceptable.

Turnout of 29 percent has not been verified, but Town Clerk Debra Lane said the election drew 2,304 voters, with more than 400 casting absentee ballots.

The budget, combined with approved 2009-10 budgets for municipal, county and Community Services, will add 11 cents to the town tax rate of $17.44 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, an increase of 0.6 percent. Click here to download overall budget summary and tax impact.
