School Budget Validation Referendum

Do you favor approving the Town of Cape Elizabeth school budget for the upcoming school year that was adopted at the latest school budget meeting of the Town Council?

YES ........ 1837
NO ............ 686

The following is a non-binding expression of opinion for the consideration of the School Board and Town Council.

I find the school budget adopted at the April 25, 2011 Town Council’s school budget meeting to be:

TOO HIGH ..................... 813
ACCEPTABLE ............. 1288
TOO LOW ...................... 279

Cape Elizabeth voters overwhelming supported the school budget for 2011-2012; and, in a special election May 10, also chose their current State House representative to represent them in the Senate.

Unofficial results show 1,837 Cape Elizabeth voters said "yes" to the Town Council's adopted school budget for 2012, and 686 said "no".

The $21 million school budget adds $447,719, or 2.2 percent, to this year's $20.6 million school budget, and will mean a 33-cent, or 2.6 percent, hike in the $12.89 tax rate for school services.

Dill favored for Senate District 7 seat by wide margin in Cape Elizabeth

By a 2-1 margin, Cape Elizabeth voters said they favor Cynthia Dill, D-Cape Elizabeth, to succeed State Sen. Larry Bliss, who resigned as senator from District 7 last month.

Dill received 1,766 votes in Cape Elizabeth, compared to South Portland Republican Louie Maietta's 833 votes, in a special election May 10.

update 05/11/11 - Dill won the overall race, defeating Maietta in both South Portland and part of Scarborough, the other communities that make up District 7.

Turnout 35 percent

Voter turnout was 35 percent, said Town Clerk Debra Lane. The percentage is based on the number of ballots cast for the State Senate election, which in Cape Elizabeth was 2,643, Lane said. Of those, 530 were absentee.

The school budget vote drew 2,608 voters, with 497 cast absentee.
