Kim Monaghan-Derrig was the winner of a special State House election Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011

Monaghan-Derrig, a Democrat, narrowly defeated Republican candidate Nancy Thompson for the District 121 seat by a vote of 1,340--1,164. Results are unofficial as of Tuesday night.

District 121 represents most of Cape Elizabeth.

Monaghan-Derrig will fill the unexpired term of Cynthia Dill, who resigned this spring after winning election to the State Senate in May. Dill, also a Democrat, represents South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough as senator from District 7.

Voter turnout was 33 percent. Town Clerk Debra Lane said that 2,509 ballots were cast, 708 of them absentee.
