Cape voters favor same-day voter registration, disapprove of new gambling facilities in state referendum election

Cape Elizabeth voters approve of same-day voter registration, and said a resounding "no" to two additional gambling facilities in the state of Maine.

Unofficial election results following the close of voting on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, showed Cape Elizabeth voters strongly opposed to a casino in Lewiston, Question 3 on the state referendum ballot, with 2,686 casting "no" votes and 982 saying "yes". [Sample ballots]

Cape voters also opposed a proposed racino in Biddeford, Question 2 on the state ballot, with 2,280 voting "no" and 1,386 voting "yes". By a similar margin, Cape Elizabeth voters said they favored a repeal of a law that required voters to register at least two business days prior to an election - 2,347 voting "yes" and 1,332 voting "no" on Question 1.

Also on the state ballot Cape Elizabeth voters favored a constitutional amendment changing the years of Congressional and county redistricting; and, favored a bond issue for improvements to the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Municipal Election results

In this year's municipal election, Cape voters elected two incumbents and three newcomers to seats on the Town Council and School Board in uncontested races. Town Councilor David Sherman was re-elected, and former School Board member Kathy Ray was elected to her first term on the Town Council.

School Board incumbent Mary Townsend won re-election to the board for an abbreviated, two-year term, filling the unexpired term of newly elected State House Rep. Kim Monaghan-Derrig. Two newcomers to the board, Joanna Morrissey and Elizabeth Scifres, were elected to three-year terms.

Voter turnout

Town Clerk Debra Lane did not have exact numbers Tuesday night but approximate voter turnout for the off-year election was nearly 50 percent, with an estimated 3,694 ballots coming from approximately 7,500 registered voters. The number of absentee ballots cast was not available Tuesday night.
