Panel chosen to develop long-term plans for recycling, solid-waste disposal

The town has announced the members of a five-member committee charged with reviewing solid waste and recycling options for the community.

Town Councilor Jessica Sullivan will chair the Solid Waste and Recycling Long Range Planning Committee, which includes Jamie Garvin, representing the Recycling Committee, and Cape Elizabeth residents William Brownell, Anne Swift-Kayatta and Charles Wilson.

Brownell is completing two terms as a member of the Fort Williams Advisory Commission and chaired the commission in 2014. He served the U.S. District Court for 33 years, including service as clerk of courts and as a United States magistrate judge.

Swift-Kayatta served on the Town Council for more than 12 years, including two terms as chair. She is a past president of the Maine Municipal Association and serves on the board of the Mitchell Institute and of the United Way of Greater Portland.

Wilson is a past part-time fire chief of Cape Elizabeth, was the leader of government relations, safety and warehouse operations for Hannaford, and chaired a 2003 committee that reviewed the town's management of solid waste and recycling.

Garvin, 2014 chair of the Recycling Committee, is a vice president for marketing and communications at TD Bank.

"I am very pleased that these distinguished citizens have agreed to serve," said Town Manager Michael McGovern. The Town Council voted this month to establish the committee. Members were chosen by the council chair, Kathy Ray.

Robert Malley, Public Works Director, will provide staff support. The committee is expected to begin meeting in January.
