Property Security Assessment

Requesting a Property Security Assessment with the Cape Elizabeth Police Department is a step towards creating a safer community while utilizing crime prevention techniques. Crime prevention is an integral part of policing and is also a partnership between law enforcement and community members. It is the anticipation, recognition, and appraisal of a crime risk and the initiation of action to remove or reduce it.

A property assessment revolves around the concept of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. CPTED examines various environmental aspects of the property and offers suggestions that may help reduce the opportunities for crime to occur. Some examples of the various aspects are as follows:

  • The creation of space, its use and safety
  • The positions of buildings and other structures
  • Interior and exterior design details such as color, lighting, entrances & exits, and landscaping
  • The users of space, the flow of these users, and when and how they will use the space
