What is it?

In May of 2024, the Town Council adopted a new Pesticide Ordinance that replaces the existing Pesticide Ordinance that the voters approved in November of 2023. The new ordinance encourages the use of alternative methods and products in lieu of toxic synthetic pesticides.

Why did the Town enact a new pesticide ordinance?

To safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of the residents and to conserve and protect the Town’s waterways and natural resources.

When does it go into effect?

The new ordinance becomes effective on June 12, 2024.

Who does it apply to?

The new ordinance applies to all private residential land owners in Cape Elizabeth.

How do I follow the ordinance if I need to use pesticides?

Some pesticides are allowed under the ordinance provisions. If the pesticide is listed under the references provided on the Town’s Pesticides webpage, then no further action is needed from you. If the pesticide is not listed under said references, then you would need to apply for and receive an approved waiver from the Town.
