April 1 deadline for new Homestead property-tax exemption applications
A reminder that the April 1, 2017 deadline for new homeowners in Cape Elizabeth to file for a homestead property tax exemption is fast approaching.
"If you have moved to a new location in town or are new to Cape Elizabeth, or you have not applied before, I encourage you to apply," said Town Manager Matthew Sturgis. "But if you have applied in the past you do not need to for your existing home, if you already have it."
The state program provides a reduction of up to $20,000 ($15,000 for 2016 and $10,000 for years prior to 2016) in the value of your home for property tax purposes. To qualify, you must be a permanent resident of Maine, the home must be your permanent residence, you must have owned a home in Maine for the 12 months prior to applying and an application must be filed with the town on or before April 1.
The April 1 deadline also applies to veterans or other property tax exemptions, Sturgis said.
For more information and an application form, see the Maine Revenue Services website, or call the town tax assessor's office, 207-799-1619.
